Kadek Dewi Aryani | choreographer / dancer

"I am a dancer now... passionately performing traditional and contemporary Balinese dance, and offering my knowledge of this craft and its cultural and spiritual significance to a new generation of dancers."

Kadek Dewi Aryani, born 1977 in Karangasem, the ancient and very traditional eastern area of Bali, is one of the most promising talents of a new generation of Balinese performers, combining the strong roots of Balinese tradition with new contemporary approaches in her creative performance.

Trained in traditional Balinese dance, music and vocal artistry in Peliatan, Ubud, Singapadu, and at the STSI (Indonesian Academy of the Arts) in Denpasar, she has participated in numerous festivals and cultural exhibitions in Bali, Indonesia, and around the world. (Notably: Japan, India, Korea, England, Netherlands, Belgium, France, and USA)

Over the last decade she has distinguished herself with stunning collaborations and performances in the contemporary performing arts field. Composers such as Aryawan and Dewa Ketut Alit (Bali), Dewa Bujana (Indonesia) or Kevin Bird (Hawaii) have been inspired by Dewi to compose music scores for her dance, or have utilized her dance and vocal talents to enhance their own artistic endeavors. She also worked with Indonesian visual artist Erewan on elaborate performances, uniquely blending the worlds of the performing arts with the visual arts.

She has appeared in Robert Wilson's epic "I La Galigo" with original music by Rahayu Supanggah, and was invited to dance with Gamelan Cudamani at the World Festival Of Sacred Music in Los Angeles. She is also a principal dancer in the multi-national cast of Kobalt Works, a European dance troupe which has performed in Belgium, the Netherlands, and France.

As a frequently invited guest of Balinese television stations, she interprets traditional dances with her own choreography, and also showcases new contemporary music and dance compositions.
